Teaching Philosophy

Empowered, Creative Problem Solvers

I empower my students to be active decision-makers in their learning. I foster creative critical thinking and kind self-reflection to enable students to take ownership of their learning. Self-empowered learners are motivated learners.

Thoughtful Musicians

I bring compassion to each lesson, understanding that each student’s life-path is unique. Making music is a reflection of our innermost selves and life experiences. Study of art, literature, psychology, and nature form one’s interpretations of musical works. These along with the individual’s own story connect their path to their interpretation.

Strong Roots Enable Growth

I hold students to high standards and am clear with expectations. Each student’s learning plan is suited to their specific needs and performance goals. With this tailored approach, students learn actionable practice techniques, interpretation tools, and delve into many different styles and periods of music.  I establish a strong foundation of fundamentals: rhythm, finger technique, scale knowledge, as well as a holistic approach to air management, and development of a beautiful, colorful, rich tone. With strong technical, historical, and musical roots, my students have ample tools to approach any music they encounter.

Scheduling and attendance policies:

Lesson scheduling is done on a month by month basis.  The entire schedule is posted on the password protected lesson schedule page.

It is the student’s responsibility to know their lesson time.

All lesson cancellations must be submitted by the 1st of the month or date specified by the teacher, excluding any illnesses or family emergencies (both of which require either a phone call or email from the parent/guardian).  All excused absences will be made up at the discretion of the teacher.  Rarely, I may need to reschedule lessons due to unexpected performances.  I will make every effort to notify you well in advance (typically before the monthly schedule is posted) and will make every effort to find a mutually agreeable time for a make-up.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL NOT BE REFUNDED OR MADE-UP.
